What would you do if you have to kidnap a girl so that she could elope with your friend and in the process you fall in love with her??!! Prem (Ranbir) is a guy who is always ready to help everyone but his lady luck is not always helpful to him. All his endeavors cause some kind of trouble or the other. The person who has suffered the most because of Prem’s helpful nature is his father! Now one of Prem’s friends is in love with a girl but is facing opposition from her family. To help his friend to elope with the girl, he kidnaps her and he falls in love with her. But soon to his relief, he comes to know that he has kidnapped the wrong girl. His friend does not know her. This girl is Jennifer (Katrina). Prem apologizes to her and soon becomes a very good friend of hers. And everyday he falls more and more in love with her. But Jennifer loves someone else!

In 1947 somewhere near the Islands of Bahamas, a ship carrying loot worth millions of dollar had sunk and an innocent man was blamed for it. The treasure is still buried deep in the sea. The only man who knew where the treasure is, died years ago trying to acquire it. Now four people are after this sunken treasure and none would stop at any cost. A Mafia Don wants it for his own gain, one person needs it to save his own life, one person has to get rid of his past demons and go after the treasure to save his brother’s life and one wants it at any cost for his personal reasons i.e. his desire to win. Exotic location, sexy girls, drool worthy men and one hell of a search for a hidden treasure –feel the adrenalin rushing as lives are at stake in this race to acquire the treasure and race becomes more and more dangerous with each passing step.

Avantika (Kareena Kapoor), a Psychology professor in New York, decides to make her way back to India to be with her ailing father. She temporarily finds work at the prestigious Delhi University and meets Ehsaan Khan (Saif Ali Khan) a substitute teacher at the same University. Despite reservations about Ehsaan being a Muslim, her father agrees to bless their wedding. Avantika and Ehsaan are married and leave to start a new life in New York. As soon as they settle in, Avantika manages to find a job for Ehsaan at a local University. Their neighbours are conservative Muslims and their lifestyles are a revelation to Avantika. At dinner, she is taken away from Ehsaan into another quarter where all the women dine separately. They all seem to blindly accept and obey the code of conduct set by Nasreen, who along with her husband Bhaijaan are almost the de facto head of the neighborhood. All of them look up to her. All accept another young woman, Salma. Salma visits Avantika surreptitiously the next day and asks her not to trust anyone. She tells her that her own life is in danger and she needs help. What follows are a series of bizarre events that turn Avantika’s life upside down and drive her into a morass of emotions that spin madly out of control taking her to a point of no return.
