Story
A remake tale, the story is about the low profile but highly intelligent professor Venkat (Amitabh) and he derives a wonderful theory of probability and randomness. This is notified to his colleague professor Shantanu (madhavan) who is quite an ambitious man. He decides to persuade Venkat into trying this in the real world and the best place for that would be the gambling dens. So the professors along with a team of bright students enter the dens and start their game on the 'Teen Patti'. But what starts as an experiment soon turns into an addiction
and that too a lethal one. What happens from there forms the rest of the story.
Presentation
The director has come up with a known tale and though the presentation was good, it is the narrative that was a letdown. The dialogues were slick, the script was average and the screenplay should have been better. Background score was neat and songs were not that impressive except for one number. Cinematography was rich while the art department was natural, costumes were top notch. Sir Ben Kingsley was at his best once again and so was Amitabh Bachchan, both shared excellent scenes. Madhavan was fabulous in the grey role, Raima was ravishing, Shradha was seductive, Vaibhav was intense, Saira was standard, the other big stars did their cameos effectively.
Conclusion
The film seems to have taken a strong base from the Hollywood hit '21' but few desi elements have been mixed to make it look appealing. While the first half takes off on a good note, there is a drag in the second half and it is not until the climax till things get better. But yes, there are a few highlight scenes that impress the viewers and the brand presence of the stars is quite high. The technical values of the film are quite high and the performances are apt, focus should have been there on crisp writing and interesting twists which was missing. At the box office, it would require a positive word of mouth to score a super hit, else it will be an average fare.
